Each lock emergency calls for a slightly different first step. Here is a quick guide to the most common ones.

Home lockout

Check other doors, call anyone with a spare, and avoid forcing windows. Then call a locksmith for a quote.

Car lockout

Check every door and the trunk. If a child or pet is inside and at risk, call 911 first.

Key broken in the lock

Do not push the piece further in or use glue. Keep the other half of the key; it helps when cutting a new one.

After a break-in

Call the police first and do not touch anything until they say so. Then have damaged locks repaired and the door secured.

Lost or stolen keys

List what the keys open and whether your address could be linked to them. Rekeying makes lost keys useless.
