Common ignition problems
- Key will not turn or turns only partway
- Key stuck and will not come out
- Key broken off inside the cylinder
- Worn key that only works sometimes
- Damage after an attempted theft
Try this first
Make sure the car is in park, then gently turn the steering wheel left and right while turning the key; a locked steering column often stops the key from turning. Do not force it or spray oil into the cylinder.
Repair or replace
Many ignitions can be repaired by replacing worn wafers and cutting a fresh key. If the cylinder is damaged, we replace it and code it to your existing key where possible, so you keep one key for the doors and ignition.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a locksmith job or a mechanic job?
Problems with the key and lock cylinder are locksmith work. Electrical starting faults are for a mechanic, and we will tell you if that is what we find.
Will I need a new key?
Sometimes. If your key is badly worn, a freshly cut key may solve the problem.
